Camp Lejeune, N.C. – Marines and Sailors with 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, spent the day getting a real world perspective of improvised explosive device casualty scenarios aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., Feb. 7, 2018.

The training was intended to increase the Sailors and Marines competence by taking them out of their comfort zone and preparing them for real world scenarios.

“The Sailors need to understand that in a real world scenario, Marines will be coming straight from a combat environment,” said Lt. Jesse W. St. Clair, an emergency medical physician with 2nd Med Bn.

2nd Med Bn is experimenting with the idea of creating a middle ground between combat, and a hospital.

“In the best scenario, the injured Marine would receive the care he/she needed within one hour,” said St. Clair.

Sailors try to get the injured Marine to a medical facility as soon as possible, and this middle ground would significantly increase the casualty’s chance of survival.

IED casualties are a very real threat while forward deployed, and the training was designed to better prepare the Sailors for recognizing, assessing and ultimately treating the damage they cause.

“IEDs are one of the most common weapons that we face in the battlefield today, so we must be as prepared as possible for the worst scenarios,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Alexander M. Findley.

Most of the Marines who attended the training also received IED detection skills during the course.

“A lot of Marines haven’t had to deal with IEDs in a combat environment,” said Sgt. Thomas Ruisi, an electrician with 2nd Med Bn. “This training can provide them with real world scenarios to prepare them for what they might have to deal with in country.”

2nd Med Bn provides medical support to II Marine Expeditionary Force during combat operation while being prepared to deploy on short notice to meet the warfighters’ needs in any environment, and to save every life.
