Capt. David Jones; Navy Medicine East’s (NME) senior mental health executive and regional manager for Wounded, Ill and Injured, Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury programs; received the 2016-2017 San Diego Christian College (SDC) Alumni of the Year Award at the Homecoming Alumni of the Year event Feb. 16 in San Diego.

Each year, SDC alumni worldwide have the opportunity to nominate one of their peers for this award by looking for impact and service within the alums industry and vocations. Jones was one of over a dozen nominees nominated for the award.

“Having served in higher education alumni relations for a decade at multiple institutions, Jones is hands down one of the most humble–yet highly capable men I have ever had the opportunity to get to know,” said Chad Cunningham, SDC’s director of advancement. “I know Dr. Jones' career will have lasting impact long after he retires from military service.”

Cunningham said alumni specifically look for contributions and faithful leadership in their field of work and if that leadership translates into their family life as well. It’s about substance versus position.

"I learned about the award last spring when I was serving as the Skipper for U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba," said Jones. "It’s great to be back at the college almost 40 years since my wife and I graduated to talk to the students and faculty about the foundations we received at the school in psychology, faith and service that have been part of our Navy life."

Students, staff, faculty administration and 40 prospective students from SDC attended the event in SDC’s chapel.

Navy Medicine East oversees the delivery of medical, dental and other health care services to approximately one million patients across almost 100 facilities in the eastern hemisphere—including the Tidewater Military Health System which brings together McDonald Army Health Center, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley. Plus, its public health activities extend globally. For more information, visit www.med.navy.mil/sites/nme.
