SILVERDALE, Wash. (NNS) - Commander, Navy Region Northwest (CNRNW) and commands and tenants of Naval Base Kitsap (NBK), Naval Station Everett (NSE) and Naval Air Station Whidbey (NASWI) Island finished their last training scenario for the annual anti-terrorism exercise Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield (SC/CS) Thursday, February 8.

The exercise began Jan. 29 and ran across naval installations nationwide until Feb. 9.

SC/CS is jointly planned and conducted by United States Fleet Forces (USFF) and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) to exercise and assess Navy anti-terrorism command and control capabilities and evaluate the readiness and effectiveness of numbered fleet and region anti-terrorism programs throughout the United States Northern Command's area of responsibility.

"The purpose (of SC/CS) is to train fire and security members in response to anti-terrorism and force protection threats, (ATFP)" stated Shawn Lightfritz, the exercise controller for NASWI. "The enterprise has been running this for 14 years and this is my fifth one on Whidbey and eighth one in the region."

The fire and security details of the region's Navy bases performed a series of drills throughout the base at different intervals over the two-week span. Some evolutions also included training with state and federal emergency responders and agencies.

"The ability for us to coordinate between shore side and afloat security teams to work against a security threat is the biggest bang that we're getting out of this (exercise)," said Mark Brooks, the installation training officer for Naval Station Everett. "We had outside assessors come aboard and assist us with installing multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES) gear on our weapons, which gave us the ability to evaluate hits and misses as we fired at the incoming attack boats.

Exercises across Navy Region Northwest included waterfront threats, active-shooter and bomb threats, surveillance detection, entry control point exercises, terrorist attacks and a mass casualty.

"It is our privilege and responsibility to ensure the safety and security of our personnel, equipment and installations," said Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, commander, Navy Region Northwest. "Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield is an important annual exercise to ensure peak readiness of our people, and security forces, to deter and respond to potential security threats."

Capt. Geoffrey Moore, NASWI commanding officer, commented on these drills and the execution of them.

"We have great first responders, strong security and a lot of great precautions, but we maintain that by continuing to exercise."
