The Sailors of the Year spent the week participating in various events around the Hampton Roads area and, as part of the selection process, were interviewed individually in front of a panel made up of NECC’s Echelon 5 command master chiefs.
The NECC Sailors who will compete for a chance to be promoted to chief petty officer, are the following: NECC Pacific (NECCPAC) Shore Sailor of the Year, Electronics Technician 1st Class (EWX/SW) Christopher L. Demo assigned to Coastal Riverine Group 1 Training and Evaluation Unit; NECCPAC Sea Sailor of the Year, Navy Diver 1st Class (DSW/EXW) Michael J. Tuft assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3, Mobile Diving Salvage Company 3-1; COMNECC Shore Sailor of the Year, Personnel Specialist 1st Class (AW) Nicole J. Florent assigned to Commander Navy Expeditionary Combat Command; COMNECC Sea Sailor of the Year, Logistics Specialist 1st Class (SCW/EXW/SW) Shaun P. Witt, assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 11; NECC Reserve Sailor of the Year, Builder 1st Class (SCW/AW) Matthew T. Gage, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 18 .
Guest speaker CMDCM Lance Kitchens, command master chief, Navy Recruiting District Dallas, addressed the Sailors during the luncheon and congratulated them on their success in reaching this point in the competition.
“Always remember fidelity in the small things,” said Kitchens. “…insuring good order and discipline in training our Sailors and maintaining our equipment, this is what we have to do as leaders to assure mission success.”
The Navy's SOY program recognizes one Sailor from each command who demonstrates sustained superior performance, proven leadership, outstanding professionalism and dedication to self-improvement.
