Fort Lee AIT company reinforces ACE class with PRT

FORT LEE, Va. (Feb. 8, 2018) -- About 300 advanced individual training Soldiers from Echo Company, 16th Ordnance Battalion, were involved in a unique Physical Readiness Training session combined with annual mandatory suicide awareness training Jan. 25 on the unit’s PT pad.

Chaplain (Capt.) Peter Bahng, 16th Ordnance Battalion chaplain, conducted Ask-Care-Escort Training for the Soldiers alongside the fitness building component of the PRT session. Additionally, the troops received other wellness information during the session.

“This specific PRT training reinforced the team concept,” said Bahng, “Everyone must do it together as a team. The training can remind Soldiers of the fact that building a suicide-free environment requires a team effort. We wanted to teach them physically and mentally.”

The Echo Co. command team brought the concept to Bahng in hopes the joint session would enhance retention of the information by introducing active and enjoyable activities.

“They really enjoyed the additional PRT component that was out-of-the-box kind of training,” Bahng said. “Right after the PRT, I conducted my ACE training by reinforcing the idea suicide awareness is a team effort to the students by asking questions and having dialogues.”

Finding unique ways to reinforce ACE training is important, said Bahng, because it helps Soldiers recall it.

“If we build and keep this mindset during ACE training, it helps Soldiers to be gatekeepers for those in need,” he said. “I would like to see all units and leadership at Fort Lee support and conduct this type of training from out-of-the-box thinking, so that the Soldiers can enjoy and have a great reminder for suicide awareness.”
