Runners gathered for the girl scout Cookie Kick-Off Run Feb. 4 at the parade deck aboard Camp Foster.
Camp Foster Girl Scout Troop 422 hosted the event to promote the beginning of their cookie sale season, giving a box of cookies to each participant who registered for the event.
“This is a fun way to get people interested in girl scout cookies, as well as coming out and doing something for fitness,” said Col. Maria McMillen, a volunteer with the Foster Girl Scouts and the assistant chief of staff for G-5, planning, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing.
Along with the 5-kilometer route, runners were able to sign up for a 100-meter dash and a 1-mile run.
“This is perfect because the 5 km is [about the] length of our physical fitness test,” said Lance Cpl. Sydney Chapman, an intelligence specialist with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1. “I think it’s a good chance to associate fun with running, as well as practicing for your PFT.
According to McMillen, the girls planed the event over the past month, working hard on getting everything ready, and including the 5 km for the Marine runners.
“Girl Scout cookie season is the world’s largest ‘girl-run’ entrepreneur business,” said McMillen. “It gives young girls, our girls are age’s nine to 11, an opportunity to essentially run a business. They have to do customer service, marketing and also the money portion, learning how to take money and make change.”
The Girl Scouts have booths set up at the Foster Commissary on the weekends for anyone interested in purchasing cookies or donating to the troop.
