PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) – Members of Navy Medicine Operational Training Center’s (NMOTC) Diversity Committee volunteered their time to help serve dinner at a local community homeless shelter Jan. 25.

The event was in celebration and remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., and inspired by his quote, "The time is always right to do what is right."

The 29 NMOTC Sailors and civilians arrived just as the sun began to set and donned aprons, hairnets and gloves, while taking different stations in the kitchen and dining area of the facility. When word passed over the announcement system that dinner was ready to be served, the team went to work, serving a five-course-meal to more than 100 temporary residents.

“Diversity events like these make an impact on both the volunteers and the community,” said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Ariea Jackson, NMOTC’s Diversity Officer.

While food was being distributed by volunteers in the kitchen, more members were taking drink orders in the dining room and helping those with accessibility needs receive their dinner. NMOTC Sailors and civilians were met with appreciation and thanks while they quickly worked to ensure everyone was taken care of.

“I wanted to represent my command and help out the community,” said Hospitalman Joshua Soileau.

The shelter’s staff praised the Diversity Committee’s effort and mentioned that a regularly scheduled volunteer opportunity is in the works. Edward Johnson, the kitchen manager and former Machinist Mate 1st Class, said he would be glad to have NMOTC representatives back anytime.

“It definitely makes an impact,” said Johnson. “The camaraderie and seeing different people inspires both our guests and me. I love it when they come out to help.”

NMOTC is part of the Navy Medicine team, a global health care network of Navy medical professionals around the world who provide high-quality health care to more than 1 million eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea, and on the battlefield.
