The Virgin Islands National Guard 104th Troop Command executed a Field Training Exercise at the Howard M. Wall Boys Scout Camp, Feb. 3-4.
The purpose of the exercise was for soldiers to practice the required skills operating in a field environment to conduct logistical support, sustainment operations, recovery operations, movement plans and load plans.
During the FTX, 662nd Engineer Company was tasked with clearing debris, which both allowed unit personnel to get hands on with the equipment while improving the campsite. The operation was led by Sgt. 1st Class Hillroy Williams, readiness sergeant for 662nd.
“As usual my unit came out and accomplished the mission that they were tasked with,” said Williams.
Soldiers from 662nd Eng. Co. also participated in Preliminary Marksmanship Instruction class which was instructed by Sgt. Raphael King.
661st Military Police Detachment provided security for the inner and outer perimeter of the camp, training on generator maintenance and operation, PMI, and driver’s training.
“Even though this was a short exercise the soldiers got a lot of training in,” said Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Abraham, 661st MP Det.
Detachment. 1, 1-114th Aviation Security & Support Battalion assisted with assembling the Tactical Operation Center, as well as their general purpose tent for classes on landing zone and pick up zone training to include hand and arm signal training.
All soldiers were also required to go through the Threat Awareness and Reporting Program training while out in the field.
“We are still at a crawl phase,” said Master Sgt. Pete Stapleton, operations sergeant. “This FTX gave us a foundation to start and build from.”
In the next few months there will be another FTX which will help to identify the battalion's strengths and weakness in field operations.
