The Airman and Family Readiness Center at Dover AFB supplies Team Dover with the assistance and resources they need to vote. Service members, their eligible family members and overseas citizens are entitled to vote using an absentee ballot.
“The Federal Voter Assistance Program promotes voter awareness by helping members register to vote, request absentee ballots and notify their local election officials back home of a change of address,” said Sue Holliday, chief of the Dover AFB AFRC.
Every time a service member changes bases they must register to vote at that new station, said DeWitt Little, Community Readiness Consultant at the Dover AFB AFRC.
Service members have the option to go online and utilize the blank, electronically-fillable PDF or fill out a hardcopy registration form at any military base.
“Never assume that your ballot will be sent to you without sending a new Voter Registration,” Little said. “It is recommended voters complete and send in a new Federal Post Card Application every January.
All qualified members are encouraged to complete election forms early in the year in order to be able to participate in upcoming elections.
It is important for all service members to make sure they update their mailing address with their election office every time it changes. Each state has different rules regarding absentee voting, but the first step is to fill out the FPCA and send it to the proper election office of the member’s state of legal residence.
The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act states that any active duty military members and eligible family members who are located outside of their voting jurisdiction are potential absentee voters, said Little.
The information provided by service members on the FPCA is what the election office uses to determine if the state voter registration requirements are met. It is essential to follow through with the application process to confirm that the registration was received.
“The Installation Voter Assistance Office is here to help you exercise the very right you protect – your right to vote,” said Holliday.
