“The baskets we put together come from a combination of Operation Helping Hands, which is a program for people in need of food,” said Maj. Sean Phillips, director of community ministries for Fort Campbell. “At any given time if you experience a crisis, you need a little extra food, Operation Helping Hands provides that.”

The Chaplaincy’s Operation Helping Hand (OHH) is a proud tradition across the Army. Fort Campbell OHH is a program that exists to assist local Soldiers in need post-wide, especially during the Holiday Season.

Phillips explained that funds for Operation Helping Hands comes through chapel tithes and offerings and that the fund had a fairly good amount of money in it this time of year.

“We decided that we would use some of that [fund] to purchase holiday gift baskets from the commissary,” Phillips said.

Working with the commissary, the boxes contained traditional Thanksgiving fixings like pumpkin pie, potatoes, cranberries, etc.

“We supplied with the boxes, a $25 commissary gift card, so that the Service Member or recipient could go and pick up a turkey or ham, whatever they want, and then they have a full meal,” Phillips said.

Phillips said they provided 200 boxes to Soldiers across the installation and plan to provide 200 additional gift boxes around the Christmas holiday.

“It was just a blessing that our sacred communities wanted to give out to our Soldiers and say we are trying to share the blessing of some of our abundance,” Phillips said.

The gift boxes were not distributed based on means, but rather by who would appreciate the thought behind the gift.

“This gift comes from our chapel as part of our sacred worship, we want to give this to Soldiers and share the blessings God has given us in our lives,” Phillips said.

The sacred communities consist of all the offered chapel programs and its participants.

“Every chapel program had a part in these boxes,” Phillips said. “We all just wanted to share our blessings, pass on the good will and remind our Soldiers that we appreciate you.”
