TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, Pa. — A local Soldier plans to harness everything he learns in the course of his military career to become one of the Army’s most senior enlisted members.

Sgt. 1st Class Edward Monell was named Tobyhanna’s Warfighter of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2017 during a recent ceremony here. The former recruiter served in the Stroudsburg Recruiting Station, Wilkes-Barre Recruiting Company for three years. He was recently reassigned to a unit at Fort Drum, New York, where he will perform duties as a mechanic, his original military occupational specialty.

“Monell is one of the most professional Soldiers I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with,” said Sgt. 1st Class Stephen Healy, station commander. “He is knowledgeable and honest with his feedback.”

Its obvious Monell loves being a Soldier, according to the people he works with. He sets the bar high and generally exceeds Army standards, they said.

The self-proclaimed “quiet guy” transitioned quickly from being a generator mechanic to mentoring young men and women in Monroe, Pike and Carbon counties.

“He understands the responsibility inherent in being in the public spotlight and the expectations of the American people,” Healy said. “His integrity is beyond reproach.”

Leaders commend his “sterling” leadership and Army physical fitness test excellence. The 16-year Army veteran was also recognized for his willingness to volunteer for practically any project or task while stationed stateside or deployed overseas.

As a future Soldier leader Monell mentored numerous future Soldiers, helping them earn advanced promotions prior to attending Basic Combat Training, according to Healy. “He always places the mission first and regularly volunteers to be the lead,” he said.

Monell has deployed to Southwest Asia multiple times and said he looks forward to the opportunity to go again if the Army can use his skills and experience.

“There are a lot of people who have helped me along the way,” Monell said. “I owe it all to my wife, family and excellent leadership.”

The Warfighter of the Quarter Award recognizes the bond between the depot workforce and the warfighters they support here and around the world. Monell’s relationship with Tobyhanna goes way back. The generators he’s worked on in the field were repaired by depot technicians after the unit returned from deployment.

“Personnel here do an outstanding job supporting the warfighter,” said Monell. “Their attention to detail and quality of work is without question, the best.”
