Marines with 2nd Maintenance Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group took part in Innovation Boot Camp aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jan. 11.

Innovation Boot Camp is a Marine Corps Systems Command sponsored program that supports Gen. Robert Neller, Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Message to the Force 2017 by promoting adaptation, innovation and change to meet future threats.

“We created this week-long training program that teaches computerized design, 3D printing, welding, electronics, soldering … and some surveillance,” said Albert Vega, president of Building Momentum, the organization that provides the training. “At the back end of it, we issue a capstone project. (The program) takes what you learned throughout the week and gives you a field-related problem.”

According to Vega during the capstone project, Marines are presented with a technical challenge with added limitations and time limits.

A recent Innovation Boot Camp for U.S. Marines in Kuwait resulted in wireless Global Positioning System solutions that may become very useful to the Marine Corps in the future.

The capstone project for the Marines with 2nd MLG was to create and program multiple combat-capable robots – with only one night to accomplish the task.

To test the functionality of their creations, the Marines pitted their robots against each other in a tournament.

“We teach hands-on,” said Vega. “You learn something by doing it. When something doesn’t go right or when some things do go right, you’ll remember that.”
