Senior Airman Christopher Arnold, 47th Contracting Squadron contracting specialist, was chosen by wing leadership to be the “XLer,” for the week of Sept. 18.

The “XLer,” a wing-level award program sponsored by Col. Charles Velino, 47th Flying Training Wing commander, and presented by Col. Michelle Pryor, 47th FTW vice commander, is awarded to those who consistently make outstanding contributions to their unit and Laughlin’s mission.

Arnold, a native of Indianola, Iowa, helped orchestrate the T-6 Texan II sunshade program being constructed on the flightline to help protect Laughlin’s aircraft from extreme temperatures and severe weather that may damage the aircraft. This helps Laughlin keep undergraduate pilot trainees in the air and helps them graduate on time.

“I assisted with the market research phases allowing us to streamline the process using established contracts on the General Services Administration website to award the project saving time and money,” said Arnold.

He also contributed to the new fencing project located on the flightline as well by saving $240,000 in erroneous costs. The new fencing will help repair deficiencies and secure flightline workers and aircraft.

“I was able to go through their proposal identifying line items that were not authorized along with negotiating with the contractor to reduce the amount down to a fair and reasonable price,” he said.

He also provided additional and innovative on-the-job training opportunities to help supplement his squadron’s contracting training program.

“I provided training to individuals in my section in regards to contracts, invoices, and using the GSA website to award projects in a streamlined manner,” Arnold said.

For helping his shop negotiate T-6 sunshade project, securing a reasonable and efficient cost for the flight line fencing project, and for improving his squadron’s training program, Arnold was awarded this week’s “XLer.”
