Ninety Special Operations soldiers graduated from the National Mission Brigade’s advanced special operations training course during a ceremony at the Kabul Military Training Center, Kabul, Afghanistan, Jan. 9, 2018. Lt. Gen. Mohammad Sharif Yaftali, Chief of General Staff for the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces, and Maj. Gen. Bishmillah Waziri, Commander of the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command officiated the ceremony.

The 90 graduates will employ their skills immediately, joining their assigned Special Operation Kandaks (Battalions). The NMB Kandaks are capable of deploying anywhere in Afghanistan in response to a crisis or Afghan security priorities.

“It is a proud day for the Afghan,” Waziri said during his remarks to the graduates.

Waziri is responsible for the supervision of the growth of ANASOC. With the announcement of the Afghan Road Map in 2017, the Afghan government decided to invest resources in the force that conducts approximately 70% of all ANA ground offensive operations. The Afghan government directed ANASOC’s move from a division to corps headquarters and authorized the doubling of the Commando force from nearly 11,700 personnel to approximately 23,300.

ANASOC established the NMB in July 2017. The NMB consists of a brigade-level headquarters with a deployable mission command package, including the 6th Special Operations Kandak, Ktah Khas, and two Special Forces Kandaks. Liaison personnel from the Ministry of Interior and National Directorate of Security serve in the NMB headquarters to ensure ANA-Afghan National Police coordination.
