KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – The 39th Transportation Battalion Property Book Office recently won the United States Army Europe Supply Excellence Award for Fiscal Year 17 and will compete for the Chief of Staff of the Army SEA.
Last year, the battalion won the Army Level II (A) Property Book Operations Modified Table of Organization and Equipment category, and most recently received notification that they will compete again for the FY 18 SEA evaluation, March 2018.
The SEA program objective is to enhance logistics readiness and supply effectiveness. It provides an incentive for extraordinary supply and support operations, property accountability, and resource management while enhancing awareness of the Army’s Command Supply Discipline Program.
Warrant Officer Craige Sears and Staff Sgt. Jeury Estevez, carried on 39th’s supply excellence while bringing fresh perspectives and new ideas to the table. When they arrived to the unit, they immediately began preparations for the competition. They implemented and improved the battalion’s systems and processes to reduce excess, streamline property book operations, and develop unit level CSDP operations.
“Our overall goal as a PBO team is to assist commanders with property and supply procedures, and ensure they have all the tools they need to be successful,” said Sears, “Competing for the SEA is challenging, but it helps the PBO provide outstanding service to subordinate units and sets the standard for unit level supply excellence.”
Estevez added that “by competing for the SEA we not only force ourselves to be better, but we motivate junior supply sergeants and clerks to do their best, and we mentor them as we go through the process. We have a unique challenge of not having many 92Y Soldiers in the battalion so we have to be at our best in order to cross-train our 88N unit supply personnel in the transportation detachments.”
John Acebo, the USAREUR SEA program manager, spent a day with the PBO team inspecting each aspect of property book and supply operations. He met with the entire S4 team and some of the senior leaders in the battalion. Sgt. Brian Carey, the S4 non-commissioned officer in charge said that the experience was intense and rewarding.
“We got to see how in-depth these inspections are and we learned a lot in the process,” Carey said.
The battalion received the news, Sept. 26, that it won the USAREUR SEA and will compete for the Army level award. There are still a few steps in the process including finalizing the competition packet and ensuring every piece is in place, but the team is more than willing to put in the hard work to continue the tradition of excellence.
“Our goal is to always get better not only in the PBO shop, but at the unit level as well,” Sears said. “We want to mentor and train unit level supply personnel so when they make it to the next level they have the skills and expertise required to effectively conduct supply and property book operations. This competition is just another training event for us.”
The 39th Transportation Battalion is excited to have made it this far and looks to improve upon this success in the future. The battalion will continue its supply excellence by improving Soldiers skills to meet the demands of Army operations.
