JOINT TRAINING CENTER, Jordan – On Dec. 21, 2017, Soldiers from the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army 8th Mechanized Battalion, along with Soldiers from the California Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion 184th Infantry Regiment “Nightstalkers,” celebrated the culmination of a 10-week Jordan Operational Engagement Program training rotation with a graduation ceremony at Joint Training Center in Amman, Jordan.
The Jordan Operational Engagement Program, commonly referred to as JOEP, is the largest training program funded by the Counter Terrorism Partnership Fund. It focuses on regional security, partnership building, and enhancing the Jordan Armed Forces’ capability to better defend their country against ISIS and any other violent extremist organization that may threaten the safety of its people.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Lt. Col. Phillip Armstrong, battalion commander of the Nightstalkers, remarked, “The Jordan Operational Engagement Program is very important. Jordan and the United States have a historic, unbreakable, and strategic relationship that spans decades. The Jordan Operational Engagement Program further cements that partnership. Witnessing first-hand the professionalism, leadership, and expertise of the 8th Mechanized Battalion, outlines just how special the JOEP program truly is. My Nightstalkers are fortunate to train alongside such capable Troops.”
In early November, the Nightstalkers arrived in Jordan, spearheading the latest JOEP training rotation with the 8th Mechanized Battalion. Nightstalker leadership from Bravo Company, which hails from Dublin, California, immediately began planning and coordinating training ranges with their 8th Mechanized Battalion peers. What followed was a high-tempo training rotation which included mortar live fire exercises, squad and platoon level battle drills, Javelin missile live fires, basic and advanced medical instruction, day and nighttime rifle and machine gun qualification ranges, and base security operations. The Nightstalkers will now focus on key collective training tasks while awaiting the next JOEP training rotation with the 11th Border Guard Forces, which is set to launch in early February.
