More than 3,000 Airmen, DoD civilians, retirees and family members showed up at Sun Plaza Park for this year’s base picnic Aug. 25.

According to Donna Whitmore, 341st Force Support Squadron commercial sponsorship coordinator and picnic committee member, the annual base picnic allows Team Malmstrom to take a step back from the daily grind of the mission and focus on relaxing and sharing camaraderie.

“We want to make sure that our Airmen do more than work and that their families get to enjoy their down time with them,” Whitmore said. “Events such as the base picnic encourage and support the forging and fostering of bonds which in turn make healthier and happier military members.”

The picnic kicked off around 11 a.m., and Col. Ron Allen, 341st Missile Wing commander, gave some opening remarks.

“Thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting the base picnic, and thank you to all of our sponsors for making this happen,” Allen said. “We appreciate all the volunteers for setting this up and our force support squadron for all of their hard work putting this together.”

Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks were served while families roamed around the park viewing a car show and static equipment displays from maintenance, civil engineering, security forces and the 40th Helicopter Squadron.

In addition to the static displays, the 341st Security Forces Squadron military working dog handlers gave K-9 capability demonstrations to those in attendance, and families were able to enjoy snow cones while getting their faces painted or fishing for trout.

Airman 1st Class Andrew Tarango, 341st Logistics Readiness Squadron logistics planner, attended the picnic and said it is nice to see the entire base come together at one time and share camaraderie during a relaxed event.

“I think it’s important that we do more community type events where we all come together instead of just within our units,” Tarango said. “You get to meet a lot of different people and it’s a good time. I wish we did this more frequently.”
