Marine Corps Air Station New River started their holiday season with the annual tree lighting ceremony at the Officers’ Club, Dec. 3, 2017. After a few words from Col. Russell Burton, the station’s commanding officer, the tree was lit and attendees dispersed to participate in the events offered at the event.

Families were offered hayrides, train rides, food and several activities for children to enjoy. During the event out toys and treats were handed out to children who attended.

“Putting on the tree lighting ceremony is a good way to gather the families,” said Jessica Anderson, supervisor at the Tarawa Terrace community center. “They can meet Santa, get hot cocoa, cookies, decorate cookies, decorate ornaments and create their own picture frames.”

This year, over 1,000 people attended the event and several parts of the air station were involved in the

    execution of the ceremony.

“We couldn’t do it without clubs and catering, base maintenance, the working party and the volunteers,” said Aimee Guareno, recreational programmer at the Tarawa Terrace community center. “Each day, one of us has been out here throughout the week and even before this week. We’ve been putting this together months in advance. We can’t thank everyone enough for all they’ve done. It just couldn’t happen without them.”

The volunteers came from both Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River.

For many, the tree lighting ceremony was more than Christmas music and lights. To Sgt. Nathaniel Dungca the event meant making memories with his family.

“My kids are running around messing with the arts and crafts table,” said Dungca. “I’m not really an event guy, but the one thing I got a kick out of was seeing my kids smile. That’s the one thing I cherish and adore.”
