Aircraft with the 156th Airlift Wing do not fly solely because of the efforts of maintainers, pilots and air traffic controllers; it takes the work behind the scenes to provide the vast support network necessary before the chocks can be pulled for the next mission.
Among those providing those essential services are the Airmen of the 156th Force Support Squadron.
Identification section technician with the 156th Airlift Wing, Airman 1st Class Angel Nieves Viruet tends to many essential duties besides operating the equipment that produces the ID cards or computer access cards for the wing’s service members.
“We rotate duties such as processing promotions, changing positions codes for personnel and handling retirements as well as in processing new members,” said Viruet. “We take care of the whole service member including dependents each day.”
Viruet said that each day, they may average producing 50-new ID cards including those to outside Department of Defense component member with the Army, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard.
The various services offered are too critical to just focus strictly on quantity. Getting it right is a necessity for members pay and benefits.
“Every other week, we perform an audit on our processing,” said Chief Master Sgt. Neil Larregui, FSS superintendent.
Airman in the FSS not only valued, but empowered and encouraged to provide betterment ideas for the section’s processes said Viruet.
Servicing each member at times can be slow due to the Rapids/DEERS system. We estimate 15 minutes minimum to complete one client’s new ID card said Viruet.
Providing flexibility, the Customer Service Office is open to all service customers such as dependents and retirees Tuesday through Thursday for walk-in attention; Friday’s services are primarily reserved to take care of the needs of current military members.
Larregui stressed that the FSS is committed to providing the best customer service to their members, however asks visiting clients to contact them in advance at 787-253-7568 or 9019 to confirm the DEERS system is operational and to ensure members know exactly what paperwork will be needed to assist particular issue.
