KEYPORT, Wash. – Commander, Submarine Group 9 (COMSUBGRU-9) conducted a change of command ceremony at the Naval Undersea Museum, Dec. 15.

Rear Adm. John Tammen, from Washington Township, New Jersey, was properly relieved by Rear Adm. Blake Converse, from Montoursville, Pennsylvania, during the ceremony held in the Jack Murdock Auditorium.

“Our Submarine community, and specifically Group Nine, represent the best our country and our Navy have to offer,” said the event’s guest speaker, Rear Adm. Daryl Caudle, commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. “A team dedicated and focused on mission success; either on patrol, forward deployed, or at home, the professionals who work with and for Admiral Tammen are truly exceptional. I am very proud of this command. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and support to accomplish a mission that is so critical to our nation.”

Tammen assumed command of Commander, Submarine Group 9 (COMSUBGRU-9) on June 16, 2016. Under his leadership, the Ohio-class guided missile submarine USS Michigan (SSGN 727) completed its first deployment with a fully integrated crew with enlisted women. Also, the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) completed a two-year engineered refueling overhaul, the Ohio-class guided missile submarine USS Ohio (SSGN 726) returned to home after being forward deployed for more than 20-months, and the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) completed a port visit to Apra Harbor, Guam, marking the first SSBN port visit to Guam in 30 years.

“I have been honored and humbled to be the Commander of Submarine Group 9,” said Tammen. “My wife and I will miss you all and look back on our time here with very fond memories and look forward to seeing you again as our paths cross in the future.”

Tammen’s next assignment will be at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where he will serve as director of undersea warfare, or N97.

“Adm. Converse, thank you for such a smooth transition and I wish you and your wife the best as you take the helm of the pacific ballistic and guided missile submarine force,” said Tammen. “I know with your background here that you will take Submarine Group 9 to new heights.”

Converse comes to COMSUBGRU-9 from Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as the joint and fleet operations officer (N3) at U.S. Fleet Forces Command. His previous command tours include the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Louisiana (SSBN 743) and Commander, Submarine Squadron 6.

“It’s an honor and a profound privilege to stand before you today as the Commander of Submarine Group Nine and it’s especially moving to be able to take command here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where I first took command of USS Louisiana Blue over eleven years ago,” said Converse. “A lot has changed in the last eleven years, but the mission of Submarine Group Nine and the critical importance of our strategic deterrence forces and our guided missile submarines remain a cornerstone of our defense strategy."

Subordinate to Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, COMSUBGRU- 9 exercises administrative command and control authority for assigned Trident fleet ballistic and cruise missile submarines and subordinate commands and units in the Pacific Northwest. Subordinate commands include Submarine Squadrons 17 and 19 and Naval Submarine Support Center, Bangor.
