Norfolk, Va. (Dec. 7, 2017) Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story hosted a Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony Dec. 7.
The ceremony was held to honor the Sailors who were present during the attacks on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941.
“Although appearing modest, this ceremony is performed each year, normally by survivors, as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Covington, Command Master Chief of JEB Little Creek-Fort Story.
Many of the guest speakers spoke about the importance of remembering events such as Pearl Harbor.
“We must always remember our history,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Tyler Thompson, JEB Little Creek-Fort Story Sailor of the Year. “While there are painful lessons learned, it is also the source of our inner strength and spirit. We must never allow that torch to flicker out.”
The ceremony featured the last local survivor of the attack, Paul Moore.
“This is what it’s all about,” said Covington. “He was forged by the sea. He’s the only one left. Their resiliency, toughness, it’s something we all have to learn.”
After the conclusion of the first part of the ceremony, guests moved to the Pearl Harbor memorial on base. Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Honor Guard conducted a 21-gun salute, the U.S Fleet Forces Command Band played taps, and a wreath was laid at the memorial to honor fallen service members.
Ceremonies to honor Pearl Harbor take place annually at various naval bases and ships around the world.
