As we move closer to Christmas time, some Americans can recall driving around with their parents to look at Christmas lights when they were younger. For service members and their families stationed at Yokota Air Base, Japan, there is a unique way to enjoy lights half-way around the world: Winter Illumination.
Located in Sagami City, Japan, the Sagamiko Resort gates are open from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for visitors to enjoy the biggest winter illumination in the Kanto Region using approximately six million colorful LED lights. The illumination ends on April 8, 2018.
The illumination is divided into 12 sections with different themes and displays including a 48 foot tall Christmas tree, ‘Grand Tunnel of Light’, ‘the Forest of Light’, ‘the Palace of Light’ and an ocean of light placed on the ground overflowing with blue illumination.
While visitors will spend most of their time walking around or through a maze and watching the displayed illuminations, guests can also enjoy a Ferris wheel and rides. The Ferris wheel and rides are located at the top of the mountain, which you can get to while riding on a ski lift.
The park also includes several attractions, athletic play field and a day use Onsen facility. The resort is also an amusement park that people can enjoy during the day time.
It takes between 40-45 minutes to get to the resort from Yokota by car, and approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes by train.
