VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Navy’s newest Information Warfare (IW) officers joined their esteemed community during a joint graduation for intelligence and information professional officers at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach, Nov. 22.

The 37 graduates, comprised of 16 intelligence officers and 21 information professional officers, completed a rigorous 20-week course, preparing them for fleet deployments around the world.

The Information Professional Basic Course (IPBC) and the Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course (NIOBC) are the entry-level courses for all officers, regardless of commission source, who are entering two of the four specialties within the IW community.

Both courses provide officers with the basic skill sets required to perform the duties of their respective specialties in the fleet. The NIOBC instills intelligence officers with the knowledge and prowess to drive operations and inform decision makers globally. The IPBC ensures the information professional officers are able to provide exceptional network operations and communications to the fleet across every domain and in every location.

The graduation ceremony's guest speaker, Rear Adm. Nancy Norton, vice director of Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), motivated the Navy’s newest IW officers by outlining how they are now an integral part of an agile warfighting team.

“It was a pleasure hosting Rear Adm. Norton today,” said Cmdr. Andrew Boyden, IWTC Virginia Beach commanding officer. “Her inspiring words outlined 1) how connections formed now will grow and foster lasting bonds; 2) the prowess of the Information Warfare community against the backdrop of the chief of naval operation’s ‘Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority’ and four ‘Core Attributes’; and 3) the dynamic relationship with the Navy’s OPNAV N2/N6.”

Lt. Cmdr. Eric Dobson, IWTC Virginia Beach executive officer, was honored to host Rear Adm. Norton as the guest speaker, and encouraged the new IW officers to take the knowledge and experience they've gained to the fleet. “Rear Adm. Norton’s motivating words encourage us all to go further, be innovative, and work as a team,” said Dobson. “Today’s graduates will be tomorrow’s leaders in the Information Warfare community, and they are ready for decisive operations and combat.”

Information Warfare Training Command Virginia Beach, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to both active and reserve, Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
