Teams from across Air Force Global Strike Command, including the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve Command and Air Combat Command, competed in the 2017 Global Strike Challenge.
The goals of the GSC are, to showcase the world’s premier bomber and ICBM force, foster esprit de corps through rigorous competition and teamwork, to recognize outstanding AFGSC personnel and teams and to improve our combat capabilities through competition and community crosstalk
Operations, maintenance, security forces teams, and helicopter crews from bomber and missile wings competed to be named best-of-the-best. All units supporting the AFGSC mission were invited to compete throughout the challenge, showcasing their expertise, skill and capabilities.
More than 450 Airmen took part in Global Strike Challenge competitions at various locations throughout the country, culminating in the symposium and score posting event at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.
Defenders were tested on marksmanship, navigation, self-aid buddy care and tactics throughout the week.
Maintenance Airmen competed in timed trials of troubleshooting and repair tasks for various parts and equipment related to their career fields.
Helicopter security response events consisted of timed scramble launch, low altitude tactics, high altitude tactics.
Missileer competitions consisted of a two-hour ICBM missile procedure training event. The missile combat crew received various stimuli to include Emergency War Order actions, simulated emergencies, maintenance actions, and security situations which required crew members to respond according to tech data and knowledge.
The knowledge of the crew members showcases AFGSC as the world’s premier bomber and ICBM force.
"The GSC is a test for yourself, and a test for your team," said Senior Airman Gerald Brown, 790th Missile Security Forces Squadron. "It brings up team morale and the competitive spirit."
Global Strike Challenge competitors were selected from available unit personnel. The teams each wing put forth represent outstanding AFGSC personnel and teams.
GSC is in place to help foster esprit de corps through rigorous competition and teamwork.

F.E. Warren Air Force Base is home to the 90th Missile Wing, which was activated July 1, 1963, with the original designation of the 90th Strategic Missile Wing. Warren became the nation's first operational ICBM base with the introduction of the Atlas missile in 1958. Today, the Mighty Ninety operates 150 Minuteman III ICBMs on full alert 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These 150 missiles are operated, protected and maintained by more than 3,000 Airmen with the expertise to ensure our deterrence capabilities.
