FORT LEE, Va. (Nov. 22, 2017) -- Command Sgt. Maj. Jerome Smalls took charge of the Logistics Noncommissioned Officer Academy during a change of responsibility ceremony Tuesday at MacLaughlin Fitness Center.

Smalls replaces CSM Anthony A. Traylor, who retired in an event shortly after the COR. Michael Williams, Army Logistics University president oversaw the ceremony.

Williams said he was impressed by Traylor’s leadership abilities and marveled at how he improved the unit.

“When I reviewed the academy climate survey results when I first got here, we were below the Army average in 45 percent of the areas assessed,” said Williams. “This last survey I reviewed had us only below the Army average in one area – a 40 percent improvement. Big Army was raving about a 3 percent improvement … our NCO Academy knocked it out of the park and that clearly attests to the leadership of this fine CSM.”

After welcoming those in the audience, Traylor recognized the Soldiers in formation for their demonstrated excellence.

”Today … this moment is about the organization, its accomplishments and what these Soldiers have done during my tenure over the past 34 months,” he said. “I am a humbled servant and leader, and I am proud and honored to the fourth commandant of the Logistics NCO Academy.”

Williams welcomed Smalls and his wife and urged him to focus on each day.

“When you begin your day, ask yourself ‘what can I do to provide the best trained and ready Soldiers to our force,’” Williams advised, “and end your day with ‘what did I do today to provide the best trained and ready Soldier to our force?’”

Smalls kept his remarks short, but took time to thank his family and recognize the Soldiers in formation.

“The entire team looks great,” said Smalls. “There is no greater honor than to serve and be entrusted with the lives and welfare of those Soldiers serving under you. Most importantly, there is no greater responsibility than to lead Soldiers.”
