Hundreds gathered at Liversedge Field aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to celebrate the 242nd birthday of the Marine Corps during the Joint Daytime Ceremony,Nov. 8.

The JDC honored Marines from past and present conflicts, but also paid tribute to the combined service cooperation aboard the base.

“This ceremony is an important part of who we are as a Marine Corps, and a reminder of the sacrifice of those who came before us,” said Brig. Gen. Julian Alford, commanding general, Marine Corps Installations East, MCB Camp Lejeune.

Major subordinate commands and other tenant commands were involved in the rededication of the National and Marine Corps Colors.

After each attending unit was recognized, a uniform pageant displayed the uniforms that Marines wore in wars throughout the history of the
Marine Corps evolving from 1775 to the present.

“Being a part of this pageant, and representing a WWII Marine and their history in the Marine Corps is a big honor to me,” said Pvt. Jonathan Shortsowles, WWII pageant Marine. “Representing all those brave men is a really big deal. We are here to commemorate the history of the Marine Corps and bring everyone together to honor those who served.”

The ceremony ended with the traditional cake-cutting ceremony, where the oldest attending Marine passes a piece of cake to the youngest Marine present, symbolizing the passing of knowledge and tradition from the oldest to the newest generation of Marines.

“It was an honor to get the cake passed to me,” said Pvt. Leonardo Basaldua, the youngest Marine present. “This is a way to carry on the traditions of the Marine Corps. It shows that even the youngest can do what they put their mind to, especially within the Marine Corps.”

This ceremony allowed Marines from various units and commands to come together for something that all of them share, a respect for the traditions and knowledge from the Marines who came before them.

“Happy 242nd birthday and semper fidelis,” said Sgt. Melodie Snarr, narrator for the event.
