Naval Medical Forces Support Command

Navy Medicine Education, Training and Logistics Command (NMETLC) selected Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (FMF/EXW) Juan Garcia, a lifecycle manager in the NMETLC Curriculum Management Department, as the NMETLC Senior SOY. Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (FMF) PaulJames Johnson, also an NMETLC lifecycle manager in the Curriculum Management Department, is the Junior SOY.
“I was very happy and appreciative,” Johnson said, describing the moment he learned of his selection. “I went up against a bunch of other great Sailors who all deserved it.”
Command involvement with an emphasis on mission success led to Garcia’s selection.
“First, I stayed actively involved in the mission-supporting tasks given to the command,” Garcia said. “But, I was also involved in off-duty and MWR command events as well as events in the local community.”
For Johnson, it was about attitude and effort.
“I approach every task with enthusiasm and willingness to help others to accomplish the mission,” said Johnson, a New Bern, North Carolina, native. “I’m always trying to improve both personally and professionally through education, volunteer work and positive off-duty activities.”
A Las Cruces, New Mexico, native, Garcia now has his sights on personal and professional improvement that lead to advancement.
“I plan on going to an operational duty station and reenlisting,” Garcia said. “My goal then is to pass the chief’s exam and get selected to be a chief petty officer.”
Johnson said, “I want to pick up Hospital Corpsman First Class Petty Officer, obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Health Services Management, and put in a package for MSC-IPP (Medical Service Corps In-service Procurement Program).”
Garcia and Johnson share even more similarities when it comes to what drives them to stay Navy.
“I like meeting all the amazing unique people and traveling to different places,” Garcia said. “I enjoy knowing that I am able to provide care to people who are ill or injured, and help them make a positive recovery. Currently, the joy of the job is making positive changes to how Navy Medicine is taught to the new Sailors, making them more proficient and knowledgeable in providing care to fellow Sailors and family members.”
Johnson said, “What I like most is the camaraderie and always learning something new. Being a part of Navy Medicine has expanded my knowledge on the health care system and what it means to treat people in different environments. The Navy and Navy Medicine have taught me to always look for the best in everyone, and to be a better leader and a better Sailor.”
The next step is SOY for the NMETLC area of responsibility (AOR). While there is no JSOY for the AOR, Garcia will compete with Sailors from NMETLC’s subordinate echelon 4 commands – Naval Medical Logistics Command (NMLC) at Fort Detrick, Maryland; Navy Medicine Operational Training Center (NMOTC) at Pensacola, Florida; Navy Medicine Professional Development Center (NMPDC) at Bethesda, Maryland; and Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) at JBSA-FSH. That selection is scheduled to be announced Nov. 17.
