BAUMHOLDER, Germany – The 16th Sustainment Brigade inducted its newly-minted sergeants into the noncommissioned officer corps, and conducted noncommissioned officer professional development led by Command Sgt. Maj. Joe M. Ulloth, command sergeant major, of Army Sustainment Command, Oct. 20.
The Knights NCOs began the day in the rain with a three-mile esprit de corps run to the beats of the cadences chanted by the group. Shortly after the run, the NCOs donned their Army Service Uniforms and filled the Wagon Wheel Theater in preparation for their induction into the noncommissioned officer corps.
“Our newest noncommissioned officers will affirm their commitment to the professionalism of our corps, and will become a part of the unbreakable ‘backbone’ of the United States Army,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Frank M. Graham Jr., 16th Sustainment Brigade command sergeant major. “We recognize the passing of Soldiers into the ranks of the time-honored U.S. Army noncommissioned officer corps.”
Ulloth imparted instructions and words of wisdom to the inducted junior leaders as they assume responsibility for the health, morale, and welfare of U.S. Army Soldiers, one of the greatest responsibilities young Americans can earn.
He also emphasized the importance of internalizing the words, “Be, Know, Do.” and encouraged the NCOs to continue their education in the Army profession, and to teach, coach, and mentor young Soldiers who will eventually replace them in their rank.
The NCOs in the Knights Brigade closed the day with a two-hour professional development workshop at the Wagon Wheel Theater. Ulloth conversed with the NCOs about how the Army is changing and how younger Soldiers can often have different perspectives than their junior and senior leaders. He used an analogy of a giraffe and a tortoise, and explained how these two animals can have completely different viewpoints of the exact same thing.
Ulloth challenged the NCOs in attendance to live up to the standard of “Be, Know, Do,” and reassured them of the vital role the Knights Brigade plays in supporting a Strong Europe.
