AUBURN, Wash. – Thousands of people lined Main Street in Auburn to honor and pay respect to service members and veterans during Auburn’s 52nd annual Veteran’s Day Parade, Saturday, Nov. 11.

The day of honor and remembrance began with a special Veteran’s Day remembrance ceremony, at Auburn’s Veteran’s Memorial Park. Hundreds of veterans and active duty service members attended and participated in the ceremony, during which Auburn’s mayor Nancy Backus gave a speech, and the names of all of Auburn’s killed-in-action since World War I were read aloud and honored.

“[The parade and remembrance ceremony] really give us an opportunity to honor those who have given us the freedoms that we are able to enjoy today,” said Backus. “Our entire community gets behind this event, and the opportunities that I have, and that all of us have, are here because of those who have served.”

The mile-long parade opened up with a military flyover, and featured more than 200 entries, nearly 6,000 parade participants, more than 30 marching bands, including US Navy Band Northwest, and military vehicles, veterans' units, honor guards and more.

Despite the wet, gloomy, weather, Main Street was filled with spectators showing their love, admiration and support of service members and veterans. Among those in attendance was U.S. Navy veteran Guy Kenyon, who served in the Navy from 1969-1972, and who has been attending Auburn’s Veteran’s Day Parade since 2010.

“This day and this parade is just a great American tradition, and is important because it gives us the chance to remember, honor and respect all of our service members, and veterans, living and dead,” said Kenyon.

This year’s Parade’s Grand Marshall was retired U.S. Navy Chief Personnel Specialist Jorge Ramirez, who served in the Navy from 1964-1983.

“For me to receive this title, and to be selected as the grand Marshall is such a special honor,” said Ramirez. “It was such a pleasure to see all of the people on the sidewalks, all of the children waving their little flags, and all of the veterans wearing their hats, that was my favorite part of this whole experience.”

According to Washington’s official government website the goals and purposes of Auburn's Veterans Day Parade are to give honor to our country's military personnel and veterans and to their military missions of defending freedom around the world.
