Marines with Food Service Company, Headquarters Regiment, 2nd Marine Logistics Group experience more heat in the kitchen as they compete in the first round of the Maj. Gen. William Pendleton Thompson Hill Awards for Food Service Excellence competition aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Nov. 8, 2017.

The W.P.T. Hill Awards competition recognizes the best expeditionary dining facility in the entire Marine Corps and the first round determines which unit will represent II Marine Expeditionary Force in the competition against I and III MEF.

“We began operations using the Expeditionary Field Kitchen, set up the tents and added every commodity to make an expeditionary dining facility,” said Master Sgt. Richard Nelson, the operations officer with the unit. “All of this is according to the manual we go by and the judges inspect and make sure everything is in accordance with the Marine Corps order.”

The W.P.T. Award was established in 1985 and is an annual competition where the competitors are judged on upholding the standard in regards to operations, sanitation, tastes and quality of the food they serve.

“We make sure the meals are well balanced and nutritious,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Damian Sullivan, the 2nd MLG Food Service Company commander. “The Marines out there are always fighting battles and running all day long, so our goal is to make sure we give them proper nourishment and put the appropriate calories back into the Marines’ bodies to continue the fight.”

Marines with the Food Service Company were designed to support Marines in training and deployed environments. Because of the competition, Marines are able to strengthen their skills while displaying their abilities in a larger scale.

“This is the culmination of what we work on every day,” said Sullivan. “We have Marines deployed across the globe that do operations every day that we support with well-balanced meals, but when it comes to this time of the year [the competition], it’s like the Super Bowl and we’re trying to bring home the trophy.”
