SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- A Raeford, N.C. native serving in the US Army recently deployed to Puerto Rico in support of relief and recovery efforts on the island.
Spc. Dacabeon Fuller, a water purification specialist with the 247th Composite Supply Company, has been helping to provide local residents with clean drinking water after damage caused by Hurricane Maria knocked out critical infrastructure. One of the most affected areas was the Guajataca Lake region where Fuller worked long hours for two weeks.
Soldiers of the 247th CSC provided over 220,580 gallons of drinkable water to those affected by the storm, said Fuller.
Each day, Fuller and his fellow Soldiers collected and filtered water directly from Guajataca Lake using the Army’s state-of-the-art Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit. Afterwards, they would transport the water to a location for distribution to survivors of the hurricane and its aftermath.
“The hardest part was seeing the people suffer,” said Fuller. “We would go out to deliver water and a lot of houses were messed up.”
While it was difficult to witness the destruction, Fuller found comfort in knowing that he was helping his fellow Americans, especially the children.
“When you see the little kids with smiles on their faces, getting water or getting food it changes your whole day,” said Fuller. “If you’re having a bad day and you see those smiles; that gets you in the right place.”
