The 16 members of the Fort McCoy Army Ten-Miler team who took part in the 2017 event on Oct. 8 in Washington D.C. were recognized by the installation during a welcome home ceremony Nov. 1 in McCoy’s Community Center.

The team earned a second place finish in the Reserve Mixed Category during the competition that saw thousands of runners compete.
Maj. Martin Wennblom was the team’s top finisher, winning the age 35-39 age category with a time of 55:49 and finishing 39th overall.

The ceremony included presenting the team’s trophy to the installation as well as team members being presented with certificates of appreciation, a Garrison Command Team coin, and a framed photo of the team with the command sergeant major of the Army.

In addition to Wennblom, team members recognized were: Lt. Col. Mark Woomavovah; Majs. Tony Steinhoff, Peter Demeras, and Gloria Rosario; Capt. Billi Bierle; 1st Lts. Jerel Villaneuva and Mark Jensen; 1st Sgt. Hector Ocasio; Sgts. 1st Class Boyce Harris, Clarence Baugher, and Lenchow Griffith; Staff Sgts. Xavier Acevado and Beatriz Sanchez; and Sgts. Andre Smith and Holli Barnes.

“I want to thank everyone who has supported and continues to support this team,” said team coach Woomavovah.

“Special thanks to the Fort McCoy Garrison command team and Higher Headquarters Company; Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation members Patric McGuane, Sara Wiedenfeld, Jobi Spolum (now with garrison staff), and Christy Stelzner; all of the Rumpel Fitness Center staff including Jeff Utesch and Julie Pressler; and the Fort McCoy Public Affairs Office.”

The team has already begun making plans for the 2018 competition.

Fort McCoy has supported America’s armed forces since 1909. The installation’s motto is to be the “Total Force Training Center.” The post’s varied terrain, state-of-the-art ranges, new as well as renovated facilities, and extensive support infrastructure combine to provide military personnel with an environment in which to develop and sustain the skills necessary for mission success.
