    SAN DIEGO, CA, UNITED STATES

    11.02.2017

Story by Seaman Apprentice Harley Sarmiento

    Naval Medical Center San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- A Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) psychologist will be named Vice President, Board of Directors, American Board of Clinical Psychology (ABCP), Jan. 1.

Dr. David Mather, NMCSD staff member for 18 years, will assume his duties after the 1st of the year. He has also been on the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) for almost a year.

“I’ve had a lot of support for my involvement on the board from my department,” said Mathers. “The mental health department encourages their staff to be involved both within Balboa and professional organizations like ABCP.”

The ABCP is responsible for establishing criteria related to the definition and requirements for education, training and examination, which lead to Board Certifications in Clinical Psychology. The ABCP is administrated by a Board of Directors who are certified in Clinical Psychology and represent the specialty on a national basis.

“Being board certified reassures our patients that NMCSDs doctors are well certified and have the patients’ best interests in mind,” said Mather.

The ABCP, alongside the ABPP, are responsible for conducting board examinations in specialty Clinical Psychology, mentoring and training examiners, and awarding the Diploma in Clinical Psychology. The primary objective of the ABCP Board Certification process is to recognize, certify, and promote skill in the specialty. Mather has been board certified for 20 years.

“Dr. Mather is an incredibly experienced, seasoned clinician and academic who in my years here has been found to be incredibly approachable, humble, and a well-balanced psychologist,” said Cmdr. Paulette Cazares, Associate Director for Women's Mental Health. “Naming him as the vice president of the ABCP Board of Directors shows the caliber of people we have here at NMCSD who take care of our active duty and family members.”
