SAN DIEGO -- The Operational Health Support Unit San Diego (OHSU SD) conducted the first reserve Navy Medicine West Lean Sigma Six Green Belt Class for OHSU last March and followed up that success Sept. 10 with a second graduating class.

The OHSU is made up of over 700 reserve medical members. They are the first medical reserve command to integrate process improvement and safety into the reserves and completed the first known Medical Reserve Lean Six Sigma Project.

“This is the first Lean Six Sigma Green Belt course designed specifically for the reserves,” said Capt. Charles Mount, Navy Medicine West Master Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. “This course is such a big deal because no one has ever done it in the records of Navy Medicine.”

The course takes a total of five days to complete for active duty. Since reservists don’t get the opportunity to take a five-day course during the week, Capt. Mount molded the course and developed it to fit into two drill weekends.

“I think it is important that we are seamlessly integrated with the active duty to work together with the Lean Six Sigma process improvement,” said Capt. Judy Dye, OHSU SD Executive Officer. “Taking the course enhances opportunities for our reserve components.”

The course was designed to introduce reservists to the high reliability culture that NMCSD expects, according to Lt. Cmdr. George V. Lane, a NMCSD Nurse Consultant and a graduate of the class.

“Our reservists are the first to get Lean Six Sigma certified,” said Mount. “It’s truly a big deal and a huge accomplishment for NMCSD and OHSU. We introduced TEAM STEPPS Training into our Command Training Program, and established an OHSU Safety Program, Infection Control Program and an Immunization Training and Quality Program. It is ground breaking.”
