Army prepares to sink Navy

FORT SAM HOUSTON, TEXAS - The Army Surgeon General and Commander U.S. Army Medical Command, Lt. Gen. Nadja West (West Point Class of '82) and a group of Army Medicine Soldiers gathered around the Combat Medic statue at Fort Sam Houston recently to record a spirit video for the upcoming Army-Navy Football game to be played in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Dec. 9.

Having met 30 times on the football field between their first meeting on November 29, 1890 and November 26, 1927, Army and Navy have met annually since 1930. This game has inter-service "bragging rights" at stake. For much of the first half of the 20th century, both Army and Navy were often national powers, and the game occasionally had national championship implications.

The game has aired nationally on radio since the late 1920s, and has been nationally televised every year since 1945. The game is especially emotional for the seniors, called "first classmen" by both academies, since it is typically the last competitive regular season football game they will ever play (though they sometimes play in a subsequent bowl game).

The Navy currently leads the series with 60 wins, 50 losses and 7 ties. On December 10, 2016, Army beat Navy 21--17, snapping Navy's 14-year winning streak.
