SAN DIEGO (NNS) – At Fleet Week San Diego, dozens of visitors are strolling on Broadway Pier to view some of the latest military displays, including Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) advanced medical equipment, Oct. 12-15.
This year marks the first time NMCSD is displaying some of the hospital’s latest medical technology at Fleet Week San Diego in efforts to educate visitors on how the military facility continues to improve inpatient care.
Established in 1997, Fleet Week San Diego is an annual event that pays tribute to all military personnel with a variety of public events.
NMCSD’s Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care (C5) Gait Lab is participating to showcase how technologically advanced simulation apparatuses can advance patient care and rehabilitation.
While there, Bioskills Simulation Training Center is also featuring its high-tech models: modern mannequins.
“The modern mannequins, such as the SimMan 3G, are the highlights of the hospital and we like to show our toys,” said Donald Cure, lead simulation operations specialist at NMCSD.
“NMCSD wants to debut what technology we use ---to show what makes us better providers,” said Cure. “The mannequins are used to train medical personnel at NMCSD and we hope to educate visitors at Fleet Week San Diego this weekend.”
According to Cure, compared to standard medical mannequins on some Navy ships, NMCSD’s SimMan 3G are the “Cadillac” of mannequins due to its life-like features. The high-tech mannequin enables the figurine to breathe and blink its eyes and give staff at Bioskills Simulation Training Center the ability to monitor its heartbeat during cardiopulmonary resuscitation training or high-trauma demonstrations.
NMCSD’s C5 Gait Lab is also presenting its latest medical display: the force platform.
The force platform is set up with motion capture cameras, similar to those used in animation movies, to not only calculate vertical jumps but to also capture body movement patterns. At NMCSD, the Gait Lab care team utilizes the force platform every day to assist wounded warriors and other patients’ multifaceted medical needs.
“The force platform tells us what part of the prosthetics needs to be adjusted and what patients need to work on for physical therapy or elsewhere,” said Julianne Stewart, C5 Gait Lab research physical therapist.
NMCSD staff is comprised of more than 6,500 military, civilian, contractor, and volunteer personnel. In addition, NMCSD has the only Navy Medicine amputee center in the Western Pacific and has been recognized for many of its clinical and research programs, including refractive surgery, post-traumatic stress, and hearing and balance disorders.
