LARES, Puerto Rico (Oct. 6, 2017) -- Four Red Cross volunteers distributed food and supplies to Hurricane Maria victims in Lares, Puerto Rico and neighboring towns Oct. 5, 2017.
The distribution of food and supplies was a joint mission between the Red Cross and the FEMA that spanned several days.
He was extremely satisfied, said Roberto Pagán Centeno, the mayor of Lares through a translator in reference to the help his city has received through the Red Cross. They have reached approximately 15,000 people or about 50 percent of the population.
The volunteers drove through the mountains of Lares for several hours distributing food and tarps for damaged roofs. The men also reached Hurricane Maria survivors in Guayo, a small community in the city of Adjuntas.
The hurricane was terrible, said Diana Monroig through a translator, a resident of Guayo. The storm did not compare to the Category 3 hurricane she and her family endured prior to Hurricane Maria. She was grateful for the help she received from Red Cross.
After spending several hours driving through the mountains, the volunteers arrived in Castaner, a small town within Lares, to combine the rest of their supplies with supplies brought by FEMA to continue distribution to the rest of Lares.
“We had a mass distribution for the people of Lares yesterday,” said Tom Corrigan, a U.S. Army retired lieutenant colonel and current volunteer for the Red Cross in Puerto Rico. “They had 250 to 500 families who picked up water, snacks and meals.”
This is the fourth time the Red Cross has reached out to Lares in order to distribute supplies to all the residents of the city.
They have given a lot of support to Lares in the last week, said Corrigan. Each time they have brought food and water to distribute.
For the Red Cross volunteers, the support that was given to Lares and the rest of the island is a continuing effort.
“It’s a matter of giving back to the greater good of society,” he said. “Puerto Rico has really taken a hit and if we can give something in return to help them, that’s why we’re here.”
