Military medical professionals from multiple nations gathered in Kyiv, Ukraine at the end of September for the 25th Multinational Military Medical Engagement.
Capt. Joseph Hoskins, a physician’s assistant from Edmond, Oklahoma and a member of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed to Ukraine with the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine, attended and said conferences like this play a large part in caring for soldiers.
“It is important to stay up to date with best practices,” Hoskins said, adding conferences are a great place to network with other military medical professionals. “If you’ve been doing something for 10 years, but here you see a new way of doing it, you can change or incorporate it into your own practices.”
The conference focused on rehabilitating wounded soldiers who have both visible and invisible wounds of war.
“There was a lot of discussion on upper and lower extremity blast injuries and how to manage those,” Hoskins said. “From the acute treatment, of how to perform surgeries, to long-term treatment and how to deal with long-term prosthetics.
“We compared our results with our Ukrainian, Lithuanian and Polish partners and also went on to discuss behavioral health, suicide prevention and teaching people how to live life after war.”
Presenters would talk about how their own country approaches a wound or medical issue and then there would be discussions of how other nations perform similar tasks.
“Everyone had similar ways of doing things, but different steps,” Hoskins said. “Everyone’s end goal was the same, caring for the soldier.”
Hoskins said this was his first international conference and he is taking lessons he learned back to his unit and that medical professionals who attended the conference are taking away lessons to ensure their own soldiers have the best chance of recovering and having satisfaction of life with their injuries.
“It is good to get a different perspective,” Hoskins said. “You take tips from others so we can provide the best medicine we can.”
