Marines with Echo Company and Combined Anti-Armor Team with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment conducted cross training in preparation for exercise Bold Alligator 17 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 29, 2017.
During the training, Marines incorporated small arms organic to the rifle platoon and heavy weapons from CAAT platoon to attack a notional objective.
“We are cross training with CAAT so we can be better prepared for combined arms and learn how to incorporate their heavy weapons with our small arms weapons,” said 2nd Lt. Nicholas Foust, a platoon commander with Echo Company.
By combining the capabilities of both units, the training aimed to have the Marines familiarize themselves with one another to improve overall readiness for future operations.
“For a lot of our Marines, this is their first time being in the trucks and operating the weapons systems,” said Cpl. Aaron Marks, a vehicle commander with the unit. “When we do missions together, we will have that unit cohesion and better understand each other’s jobs to operate effectively.”
The Marines took advantage of the opportunity to cross train by learning about each other’s equipment, tactics and maneuvers. By operating together in pursuit of a shared objective, each unit had a better understanding of the other’s capabilities and restraints.
“Whenever we conduct training events, Echo Company is there with us, however, they are often conducting their own unit training so it’s rare that we integrate,” said Marks. “But when we do train together, we take full advantage and learn as much as we can.”
Both units continue to train in order to prepare for possible real-world missions and exercises such as Bold Alligator 17, an exercise designed to showcase the capabilities of the Navy-Marine Corps team, and demonstrate our cohesion with allied nations.
