TORONTO -- Invictus Games brought about more than sport for many participants.

More than 200 business leaders, veterans and their families met at the Sheraton -Centre Hotel for the Invictus Games Toronto 2017 Veterans Career Summit.

The event offered business leaders the opportunity to connect with veterans looking to explore civilian opportunities domestically and internationally.

Leaders noted there are challenges many veterans face when transitioning from military to civilian life.

The Honourable Seamus O’ Reagan, Minister of Veteran Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence shared his personal commitment to helping service men and women.

"I too understand challenges. For years I battled alcoholism and depression, much like our military men and women. It's important to have someone look out for you and give you the opportunities you deserve," O'Reagan said. "These are dynamic men and women who are adaptable, dynamic human beings that bring a strong sense of purpose and dedication to the workforce. They don't want charity, they want an opportunity," he continued.

"I think it's incredibly important to support those that give their lives so selflessly,” said Darian Rich, Executive Vice President of Talent Management for Barrick Gold Corporation. "Transitioning to the civilian world can be difficult, however, veterans are the total package, they possess leadership skills, commitment and dedication and that's a plus to an employer," he said.

Approximately 20 companies were on hand for the summit. The two day event offered workshops, career counseling and recruitment information sessions.

Retired Cpl. Reginald Argue Joined the Royal Canadian Force at the age of 19. “I saw the horrendous beginning and end of war, when I got out there was nothing. People detested those of us that wore the uniform and what this summit clearly says to those of us who served is a resounding "welcome home," that is what Invictus means to me, people want to know they matter and have added value, “Argue said.

Organizers says that value includes the transferable skills that servicemen bring to civilian employment. O’ Reagan announced today additional funding would be set aside to help Veterans seek employment opportunities.
