FORT STEWART, Ga. -- Soldiers throughout the 3rd Infantry Division participated in suicide prevention month physical readiness training and informational briefings, Sept. 27, on Fort Stewart, Georgia.

The training was conducted to inform company leaders what suicide prevention resources are available to them and their Soldiers.

“When planning for this event, we requested a certain number of Soldiers from each unit and specifically asked for company leaders,” said Maj. Carla Schnitzlein, a psychiatrist from Winn Army Community Hospital, 3rd Inf. Div. “A lot of commands don’t know the resources out there or necessarily how to use them when it comes to suicide prevention and resiliency. We want them to make sure they know what they have at their fingertips.”

The training kicked off with physical training that consisted of six different activities. Each group completed an exercise while gaining knowledge about suicide awareness.

“Outreach through athleticism hits people where you know they're going to be a captive audience,” Schnitzlein said.

Once the physical part of the training was over, representatives from the Army Substance Abuse Program, Military and Family Life Counseling, the division chaplain and more came to inform Soldiers about how their programs work and how to contact them.

“If people knew about the resources available to them, we could help them before their situation turns from bad to worse,” Schnitzlein said.

Since 2011, suicide prevention research has grown tremendously. Due to Fort Stewart’s prevention research, the installation has seen a decrease in suicide in the last five years, said Brad Singer, team leader at the Embedded Behavioral Health Clinic with the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Inf. Div.

“I was surprised by how many different programs there are,” said Sgt. Bryan Ramos, a helicopter maintainer with 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Inf. Div. “When I return to my unit, I’m going to put together a class to let my Soldiers know they have options.

If in need of help, contact an MFLC representative attached to your unit. Resources are available to Soldiers and their Families.
