The 324th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron held its change of command ceremony Wednesday, September 06, 2017, at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, transferring command from Lt. Col. Daniel Jerden to Lt. Col. Benjamin Scheutzow.
The 324th provides the Commander of United States Air Forces in Africa with real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance and kinetic strike in support of counter-terrorism campaign plans through MQ-9 launch, recovery and maintenance.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve with you these last 15 months. I could not be prouder of the work you do,” Jerden said. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead you and work with you side by side.”
The 324th ERS originated in 1942 as the 324th Bombardment Squadron, but more recently was converted to provisionary status in 2009 and assigned to the United States Air Forces in Europe. Between 2009 and 2010, the squadron was activated three times by USAFE to execute expeditionary missions.
In March, 2011, the 324th was activated once more to be stationed at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy. Since 2012, the 324th, assigned to the 409th Air Expeditionary Group, 435th Air Expeditionary Wing, has performed launch and recovery operations supporting ISR aircraft; first with the MQ-1B “Predator” and currently the MQ-9A “Reaper.”
“Literally and figuratively, I have some pretty big shoes to fill,” Scheutzow said. “I humbly take on this responsibility knowing how important this mission is and the role this squadron plays in promoting freedom abroad.”
