Soldiers with the 24th Financial Management Support Unit, 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade on Fort Stewart conducted a Perimeter Defense Live Fire Exercise on Sept. 22. They replicated a perimeter defense and established an engagement area for a realistic enemy defensive scenario.
That week, Soldiers were tested in their development of their defense perimeter as well as their ability to protect their base against an enemy attack. They dug fighting positions, conducted both day and night fire operations and utilized a variety of weapon systems from M-4 rifles, M-249 light machine guns, as well as an M-18 Claymore mine to effectively attack the simulated enemy troops.
A finance Soldier’s daily tasks consist of the division’s finance needs from travel to in and out processing. The exercise gave them the opportunity to get out of the office and test their fighting capabilities.
“You never know what you’re going to have to defend,” said Staff Sgt. Philip Mayberry, a financial management technician assigned to the 24th FMSU. “We need to continue to practice the basics of defense and learn and adjust when there are shortfalls.”
Mayberry served as a leader of one of the fighting positions allowing him to train junior Soldiers as well as practice leading a defensive team.
“As an NCO I had to do a lot of different things and manage everything the command has thrown at me,” Mayberry said. “I was able to self-reflect and pass on knowledge to Soldiers.”
Along with the challenges presented in the exercise, Soldiers also had to be careful of the heat. As the sun beat down on the Soldiers, even taking a couple of them down with heat exhaustion, it became imperative to maintain motivation.
“We had to look out for each other and increase communication,” said Pfc. Paloma Rodriguez, a financial management technician with the 24th FMSU. “We had to cover for each other when challenges presented themselves.”
Teamwork was essential to ensure mission success and the finance Soldiers supported each other throughout all aspects of this exercise. With the completion of the PDLFX the unit can confidently go forward in their daily mission knowing that their Soldiers are ready and trained to defend anything an enemy can throw at them.
