MANAMA, Bahrain -The 2016 Bingham Award was presented to the Navy Exchange Bahrain on September 20at the Naval Support Activity Bahrain Freedom Souk.

The Bingham Award is named in honor of the late Capt. W.H. Bingham, U.S. Navy Supply Corps. Bingham was the Chief Executive Officer of R.H. Macy’s Company and was appointed by the Secretary of the Navy in 1946 to lead an advisory board for the establishment of the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM).

The NEX Bingham Award was established in 1979 to recognize outstanding performance in operations, customer service, and community support.

There are nine different categories that are graded to include customer service, associate satisfaction, financial performance, and the command’s endorsement.

“We don't set out to win the Bingham,” said Daniel Cougevan, NEX general manager. “We just concentrate on improving our customer service and merchandise and services assortments every day. Transaction by transaction being the best we can.”.

The NEX Bahrain previously won in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. “The staff is thrilled they won again after four years,” said Cougevan.

NEX Bahrain caters to two primary customers - those who are stationed at NSA Bahrain and shipboard personnel as part of a port visit to the installation.

“NEX Bahrain's main store has one of the highest sales per square foot in the NEX community,” said Cougevan. “Our sales are over $1,900 per square foot, when other NEXs in our class average $447 per square foot. A Wal-Mart or Target usually sells 300 to400 dollars per square feet. This indicates the store is undersized for its sales volume. Yet, we make the best of the space we have available to cater to our customers,” he added.

Being the best in class does not come without challenges like operating in a harsh environment and the long supply chain. Other challenges can include local customs, damages during shipment, and container delays. These uncontrollable events can make a complex supply chain even more complicated.

“Even when presented with these challenges, the NEX Bahrain team rises to the challenge each and every day to provide the best possible customer service to customers stationed here and those visiting on ships,” said Cougevan.

NEXCOM is headquarters for the worldwide NEXCOM Enterprise. Its mission is to provide authorized customers quality goods and services at a savings and to support Navy quality of life programs for active duty military, retirees, reservists and their families.

As the persistent shore presence in the Arabian Gulf, NSA Bahrain provides an operational platform for U.S., allied, and partner nations to have a forward deployed naval force ready to be where they are needed, when they are needed to secure security and stability in the region.
