DARIEN, Ill. – The 416th Theater Engineer Command welcomes Maj. Gen. Miyako N. Schanely as its commanding general in an assumption of command ceremony here September 23.
She assumed command of the 416th TEC receiving the unit colors from Maj. Gen. Scottie D. Carpenter, deputy commanding general, United States Army Reserve Command.
Schanely’s most recent assignment was as the commanding general, 102nd Training Division (Maneuver Support).
“I think I may have just met my replacement with Miyako. She’s just so impressive with multiple masters degrees and she broke the glass ceiling being the first female Japanese American to be commander of engineer command as a two-star,” said Carpenter.
He adds, “Your resume is extremely impressive. I see why the engineers are solid and with what’s going on in the world today there are challenges. Keep up the professionalism.”
Maj. Gen. Miyako N. Schanely becomes the first female two star general of an engineering command. The 416th Theater Engineer Command conducts theater-level engineer operations supporting a joint force, executing unified land operations while providing a trained and ready combat-capable force to support mission requirements.
“Being a citizen soldier is a major commitment today and we’re that celebrating continuity and change at the same time. The continuity of this organization is this group here and the alumni here today. Thank you for the history,” said Schanely.
“As our role is changing, the requirements that are going to be placed on the shoulders of the 416th TEC are rapidly evolving and we don’t know what they are. We may be going too amazing locations where we have not been to completely and those challenges are going to be ones that we take on well,” she added.
The unique capabilities of the 416th TECs include: tactical through strategic-level engineer mission command experience and this is what is going to make the command a needed entity.
She thanked Army Reserve leadership for allowing her this opportunity to lead this unit.
“I feel very privileged to be working with the all of you here. I can’t wait to soldier on,” said Schanely.
