Oklahoma City is hosting Navy Week Sept. 18-24, and Command, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (COMNAVMETOCCOM) Deputy Commander and Technical Director Dr. Bill Burnett accepted the invitation to attend as the Navy senior leader, which would bring him back to where his career began.

Dr. Burnett grew up in Oklahoma and received his bachelor’s degree in meteorology from The University of Oklahoma in 1988. He began his career as a physical science aide and storm chaser with the Storm Electricity Group at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla.

"You don't have to live near a coast to be impacted by the important work of our Navy, and it is a distinct pleasure to share that mission in my home state. This region goes all out to support its service members, and I'm proud to be a part of a week celebrating the relationship between the Navy and the people of Oklahoma."

Navy Week events draw thousands of attendees to participate and create a dialogue between sailors, civilians and local residents. Dr. Burnett participated in many events throughout the week to share the Navy message and his personal story, including speaking to a meteorology class at The University of Oklahoma and the world’s largest Rotary Club, visiting with the Potawatomi Tribe and Cherokee Nation, meeting with St. Gregory’s University’s president and local media and much more.

“I feel very proud to come back to my home state as a representative of our great U.S. Navy. It has made me realize that I have been part of some very great institutions right here in Oklahoma that helped shape my career.”

COMNAVMETOCCOM directs and oversees more than 2,500 globally-distributed military and civilian personnel who collect, process and exploit environmental information to assist Fleet and Joint Commanders in all warfare areas to make better decisions faster than the adversary.
