SAN DIEGO -- Thirteen Sailors celebrated career milestones as they donned their khakis and joined the esteemed ranks of chief petty officers (CPO) in a pinning ceremony at Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego Sept. 15.

The selectees included personnel assigned to TSC San Diego, Naval Aviation Schools Command Swim Site San Diego, Center for Service Support Site San Diego, Naval Education and Training Command Learning Site San Diego, and Center for Security Forces Detachment San Diego.

The ceremony was the culmination of a six-week training period known as CPO 365 Phase II, which began when the CPO advancement results were officially released.

Phase II is designed to strengthen leadership skills and to provide a better understanding of what it means to be a Navy chief. Phase II also included training on the history and traditions of the Chiefs Mess, physical challenges, mentorship and many additional responsibilities.

"You are now the chief, this is not a slogan," said Force Master Chief Mamudu K. Cole, Naval Education and Training Command, speaking at the event. “You must be tough. You must face every adversity head on. Our Sailors deserve to be led by chiefs they can count on. Be that chief.”

Family members and friends pinned two gold anchors on each newly appointed chief's collar as their sponsors placed a combination cover on their head.

Chief Damage Controlman Marcus R. Reed, one of TSC San Diego's newest chief petty officers, described his sentiment after finally achieving this career milestone.

"I’ve been in the Navy for 16 years,” said Reed. “I just want to thank my family and friends for supporting me through everything. I am tired, but I am proud. I am ready to lead.”

    The Navy’s newest CPOs include:

Chief Aircrew Survival Equipmentman Christopher Laguna
Chief Boatswain’s Mate Edney R. Sheehan
    Chief Culinary Specialist Cornelius Hepburn
Chief Damage Controlman Marcus R. Reed
Chief Electronics Technician John E. Lawson
Chief Fire Controlman Charles E. Luke
Chief Gunner’s Mate Edwin R. Finn
