GOWEN FIELD, Idaho – The Air Combat Command Inspector General team rated the 124th Fighter Wing overall “effective” on the final Unit Effectiveness Inspection Capstone grade, released on Sept. 11, 2017.

The ACC IG held countless interviews with Airmen and examined the Commander’s Inspection Program based on the self-assessment processes here at Gowen Field, Boise, Idaho. The final grade was composed from four Major Graded Areas. Two of the graded areas, Executing Resources and Leading the People, were graded “effective,” while the other two graded areas, Improving the Unit and Executing the Mission, were graded “highly effective.”

“We were graded highly effective at executing the mission. This is absolutely our most important calling and shows that we have the absolute right focus,” said Col. Tim Donnellan, 124th FW commander. “Our job is to take the fight to the enemy, and we are highly effective at that.”

The Idaho Air National Guard recently returned from the largest deployment in 124th FW’s history, showcasing Airmen’s capabilities to perform combat operations.

“Obviously your unit has high moral, you guys have just redeployed from a record breaking compound operation, Operation Inherent Resolve,” said Brig. Gen. Richard Coe, the ACC Inspector General. “I think that when it comes down to getting the mission done and showing your readiness, that stands out. Your unit deployed to execute that, then returned to recover and get back into a statue of full-scale readiness. It is really an honor to be able to see the artwork you guys have been doing.”

The ACC IG team consisted of approximately 40 inspectors that compiled data from online surveys, 117 group session interviews, and numerous one-on-one interviews to determine risk areas or a culture of certain deficiencies, that may need further attention. Additionally, inspectors walked around greeting Airmen and touring many work centers.

“The attitudes were good, really good here, actually. Every Airman we talked to was very approachable,” said Chief Master Sgt. Roby Johnson, superintendent of the ACC IG team. “I cannot think of one negative comment on the attitudes here at all. We have seen other units that could work on their customs and courtesies, but not here. It was so few and far between on the customs and courtesies, and in that aspect I was pretty impressed.”

The IG team awarded several individual superior performers and superior performing teams throughout the inspection. Coins were received by many deserving Airmen and one particular Airman, Master Sgt. Adam Young from the 190th Fighter Squadron, received the rare Air Combat Command Inspector General’s coin. Gen. Coe’s coin is presented to less than one percent of Airmen inspected by the IG.

“The 124th Fighter Wing is strong and getting stronger. There were really no grand surprises here,” said Coe. “You guys have a well-established program that is on an increasingly strong vector, something you should be really proud of. It says a lot about your unit, your leadership, and your ability to look internally at the things you are doing great and the things that may need resources to do better.”

In addition to successfully deploying more than 500 Airmen in 2016 and conquering the Capstone, the 124th FW was awarded the Governor’s Outstanding Unit award for the previous year and presented the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Trophy this month.

“This outside look into our organization, in combination with receiving the 2017 Spaatz Trophy for the best flying wing in the ANG, is validation of what we have always known,” Donnellan said. “Our organization is top-notch, with dedicated professional Airmen at all levels - First Class or Not At All since 1946!”
