YAVORIV, Ukraine -- Ukrainian soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 95th Airmobile Brigade and the 1st Mechanized Battalion, 30th Mechanized Brigade had the unique opportunity to attend a military decision making process course, Sept. 9-12, 2017, as part of Rapid Trident 17.

Civilian instructors from 7th Army Training Command’s Joint Multinational Simulation Center facilitated this academic portion of Rapid Trident 17. Their objective for the MDMP course was to ensure the Ukrainian units in attendance conducted standard operating procedures that align with NATO standards, which enables those Ukrainian assets to work more efficiently alongside NATO members, other Partnership for Peace nations and regional partners.

“Once they’re done with this course, each unit should have the knowledge and the ability to fit in, much better, with NATO units; understand the process of how to go through the mission analysis and the whole process of developing orders; and over time as they keep using these tools, they will become more efficient,” said Erich Hoffmann a training facilitator for 7ATC-JMSC.

Although the JMSC instructors were fully capable and prepared to instruct how to properly utilize and resource those tools, the decision to incorporate soldiers from Turkey, Poland, Lithuania, Romania and Ukraine to assist and teach sections of the curriculum was made during the planning phase of the exercise.

“During Rapid Trident planning meetings, we decided that we didn’t want to only use American instructors, but we wanted to involve the Ukrainian instructors from the International Peacekeeping Security Centre as well,” said Hoffmann. “We also concluded that Romania would provide an instructor as well. Additionally, we ended up picking up a Lithuanian and a couple of Polish instructors too.”

The significance of conducting a classroom-based course, prior to situational and field training exercises, allowed the Ukrainian command teams to build on combined capabilities to conduct multinational operations, and to improve interoperability between their armed forces and partner nations throughout the training exercise.

“They’re actually using the MDMP during the exercise,” said Hoffmann. “The higher command and the brigade have already been trained on going through the decision making process, the NATO way of issuing orders and coordination procedures. So the Ukrainian units are getting more NATO experience as we go through the course.”

From an instructor’s perspective, Hoffmann also pointed out other benefits of having multiple nations sharing experiences, lessons learned and knowledge they’ve gain over the course of their military careers.

“It’s great and everybody is learning from each other,” he said. “Once we got the ‘ball rolling’ and we had Turkish, Polish, Lithuanian, Romanian and Ukrainian soldiers all sitting in the classroom sharing their experiences, ideas and other ways to execute these procedures, you could tell that each soldier was learning from the others’ growing pains.”

As the 1st Battalion, 95th Airmobile Brigade and the 1st Mechanized Battalion, 30th Mechanized Brigade execute their FTX this week, as part of Rapid Trident 17, they may experience more growing pains while executing their mission. However, by conducting these operations in a controlled environment the Ukrainian units will continue to improve on the skills they've learned during the MDMP course.
