NYMINDEGAB, Denmark – The militaries of the United Kingdom have a long and storied past that reaches back through hundreds of years of history in warfare. However one of our allied partner's newer units is showing that having a history is not a requirement for leaving a lasting impression.

The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry was formed in 2014 as part of a restructuring of the United Kingdoms reserve, or Yeomanry, regiments and serves as a Reserve Light Cavalry Regiment headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, with squadrons located in the cities of Ayr and Cupar, Scotland, as well as Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The regiment is currently training in Denmark with the Danish Home Guard and Michigan Army National Guard's Company B, 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment, as part of Exercise Viking Star 2017.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan and worked with the U.S. Marine Corps,” said Yeomanry Maj. Terry Warburton, second in command of the Yeomanry forces here in Denmark, “It’s vital that the coalition partners work together and, in my past experiences, if we’d had these opportunities before we deployed, we could have worked much better.”

Things like different terminology, different types of equipment and different operating processes have been obstacles in the past for coalition forces trying to work together on deployments, but exercises like Viking Star 2017 are helping to change and refine how the forces from different nations work together.

“Our reservists don’t really get the opportunity of working overseas and don’t really get the opportunity of working with our coalition partners.” said Lt. Col. Toby Gaddum, first in command of the Yeomanry for this exercise.

While in Denmark for Viking Star 2017, the Yeomanry are playing an integral part in the training operation and are excited about the chance to work with both their Danish and American counterparts.
“The first week is the build up training, but the second week is really going to be the highlight. We have a three day field exercise where we all come together in a combined arms battle group.” added Gaddum.

As they continue their training here at Exercise Viking Star 2017, the Yeomanry, Danish Home Guard, and Michigan National Guard will continue to build a strong relationship with each other in preparation for whatever the future may bring.

“Especially for our reservists, the Danish Home Guard and the Army National Guard in Michigan, working together we are able to ensure that we are prepared should we be deployed in the future,” said Gaddum, “The opportunity for all three armies is colossal. We can work together, we can communicate together, and we can fight together."
